The Door
The Door is a deeply immersive character study class for the stage created especially for actors who are ready to explore their craft with depth, care, and imagination.
Taught by Bobbi Johnson of Fable & Sow Theatre Farm—an accomplished actress, spoken word artist, healer, and community builder—this course offers a truly unique approach to character creation. The Door invites actors to slow down, listen deeply, and step fully into the inner life of a role.
Each student will be assigned one character to work on for the full duration of the course, drawn from both iconic plays and lesser-known but equally powerful works. Alongside this exploration, students will prepare a monologue from their chosen play, allowing them to build a sustained, intimate relationship with the text and the character over time.
Through a rich blend of movement, dance, meditation, self-healing methodologies, improvisation, and original acting exercises, students will be guided toward discovering an individual, embodied method of character creation—one that is personal, repeatable, and uniquely their own. Rather than offering a single “right” way to build a character, The Door empowers actors to develop a process they can return to whenever they approach a new role for the stage.
The course culminates in a live showcase performance in early May, where students will present their monologues as part of the theatre class’s final performances, alongside The Study and The Return. This shared performance celebrates not only the work created in the room, but the courage, vulnerability, and growth of each artist.
The Door is more than a class—it’s an invitation. An opening. A chance to step into character, into story, and into a deeper relationship with yourself as an artist.
About The Instructor:
Bobbi Johnson is an actress, writer, teacher, and spiritual practitioner from Bowie, Maryland. She’s an NYU Tisch graduate, a decorated poet, co-founder of True North Sanctuary, and creator of The Blessed Mess Mindset.
As a child of two southern Baptist preachers, she learned the power of the spoken word, the importance of sacred practice, and the healing potency of nature and community at a young age. Her work sits at the axis of radical artistic expression, community activism, and ancient spiritual practice. It’s her mission to empower others in the true articulation of their highest self and to reinstate artists as the spiritual practitioners and social thermometers of the collective consciousness.
