The Acting Studio
The Fable Method.
Developed by Hamp Fluker, The Fable Method is an innovative acting technique that empowers actors and fosters communities dedicated to ethical storytelling. The Fable Method creates a safe space for performers to explore their identities and life experiences, promoting authenticity and vulnerability in their craft.
Drawing inspiration from influential Black Civil Rights leaders like Howard Thurman, James Baldwin, and bell hooks, the method emphasizes communal strength, identity exploration, and social justice. The method combines dynamic acting exercises, contemplative meditation, and insightful lectures, promoting personal growth that enhances participants' experiences on and off stage.
The Fable Method rests on five core principles: (1) Exhaustive Preparation, (2) Continuous Self-Interrogation, (3) Emotional Athleticism, (4) Active Analysis, and (5) The Integration of Permaculture Principles.
Through an exhaustive preparation process, performers gain a deep understanding of their roles, immersing themselves in the intricacies of character and context. Continuous Self-Interrogation encourages a reflective practice, prompting actors to examine their motivations and impulses. Emotional athleticism equips performers with the versatility needed to navigate the complex landscape of human emotions, enabling them to portray a wide range of experiences with authenticity and depth. Active analysis involves a scene study and rehearsal process that begins with full physical engagement rather than sitting at a table, encouraging actors to discover their characters through movement and trust their instincts from the start. By incorporating permaculture principles, the Fable Method advocates for a sustainable and interconnected approach to artistry and life.
The Fable Method aims to transform our artists, like our farm, into resilient, self-sustaining ecosystems. This holistic framework nurtures a new generation of artists who are not only proficient in their craft but also passionate advocates for meaningful social change.
Scene Study Classes
Return to Theatre.
Return to Theatre will explore what it means to be human. The desire to tell stories is where talent is born, and sharing these stories enriches everyone involved.
At Fable & Sow, we understand that acting fundamentally revolves around connecting with others, and we believe everyone deserves to have their story told. We uphold the philosophy that self-judgment and the judgment of others have no place in a supportive and loving process, which is our primary focus.
Return to Theatre is a unique acting class for actors of all levels, created by Hampton Fluker, Artistic Director of Fable & Sow Theatre Farm.
Students in Return to Theatre will gain valuable experience following a curriculum modeled after the first-year programs at collegiate conservatories. The program covers essential acting disciplines, including Voice and Speech, Movement, The Alexander Technique, Scene Study, and Monologue Work. Each class will focus on different approaches to acting, allowing students to engage deeply with the ideas of influential figures who have shaped global theater traditions. This will provide them with a solid foundation for continued studies if they choose to pursue acting further.
As part of Return to Theatre, students will be reading On Acting by Sanford Meisner as part of their classwork and explore scenes from a well-known American play, with scenes assigned after our first session. If the class decides, students can present their scenes to friends, family, and community members. By concentrating on the diverse approaches to acting in the chosen play (to be determined), students will gain a better understanding of and apply what they have learned through hands-on practice rather than just theoretical learning.
