Saturday, June 27, 2026
1:00 PM – 5:00 PM
The Grit Gallery | 115 Broadway, Newburgh, NY 12550

Join artist, educator, and SOLA Market founder Kemi Oritsejafor for an immersive afternoon exploring the rich tradition of indigo dyeing in Yoruba culture.

Rooted in community, creativity, and sustainability, this hands-on workshop introduces participants to the history and cultural significance of indigo ("Ẹ̀lú" in Yoruba, a word that also carrie“dye”), while offering practical instruction in natural dyeing and printmaking techniques.

Participants will learn about traditional Yoruba dye practices and create their own naturally dyed textiles to take home.

What’s Included

  • All workshop materials

  • ½ yard of cotton fabric

  • Raw silk fabric for practice and experimentation

  • Guided instruction in indigo dyeing and printmaking techniques

  • Cultural and historical context from Kemi's artistic practice

Bring Your Own Textile

Participants are encouraged to bring one or two medium to light-colored cotton or silk garments or fabrics to overdye. Indigo overdyeing is a beautiful way to refresh well-loved pieces, cover stains, add new depth of color, and extend the life of your textiles.
