If Only marks a special collaboration for Fable & Sow, bringing together playwright Jeannie Zusy, director and Fable & Sow Artistic Director Hamp Fluker, and three actors connected to the growing Fable & Sow community: Hasan Gray, Erin McGuff-Pennington, and Tatiana Szpur. At the heart of our work is a belief in the relationships that form when artists are given the time and space to investigate, play, take risks, and build something together. We’re thrilled to celebrate Jeannie’s wonderfully complicated new play and these three artists as they bring it to life at the 2026 Newburgh Fringe Festival.

In a therapist’s office in a small Hudson River town, three people wrestle with love, loss, longing, and the complicated places where our feelings refuse to behave.

If only Estelle were manic depressive rather than atypical.
If only Maggie could escape her miserable parents and make it to the city.
If only Dr. Dan’s wife weren’t so goddamn sick.

And if only everyone weren’t having so many complicated, unethical, nonsensical feelings.

Moving across the course of a year, If Only explores what happens when desire, responsibility, grief, and intimacy collide, and when the lives we imagine for ourselves begin rubbing against the lives we actually have.

Tender, uncomfortable, funny, and deeply human, If Only is a tragicomedy about everything that can happen and everything that doesn’t.
