The Verse places classical text in conversation with the contemporary artist. Rather than treating heightened language as something to be mastered from a distance, actors investigate what happens when enduring questions of power, leadership, morality, responsibility, violence, love, justice, and community are placed back inside living human beings.
The course incorporates classical text, verse, rhetoric, physical and vocal investigation, ensemble discussion, writing, and performance. Actors are asked not only, “How do I speak this text?” but also, “Why does this story matter now? What does it ask of me? What responsibility do I carry when I stand before a community and tell it?”
The course creates space to interrogate the canon as well as perform it, examining what has historically been centered, what has been omitted, and how artists can enter inherited texts without surrendering their own cultural, ethical, or imaginative perspective.
Ages 21+.
This course may explore mature adult themes and material as part of the artistic work.
Following registration, all participants will receive Fable & Sow’s Adult Participation & Studio Acknowledgment by email. The acknowledgment must be reviewed and signed before participating in the first class.
